WWII veteran celebrates his 100th birthday on Christmas Eve
Just weeks after the Battle of Iwo Jima was fought in 1945, Bill Horne climbed to the top of Mount Suribachi and sat under the American flag that can be seen in the historic photo of U.S. troops raising that flag. Horne turns 100 on Christmas Eve.

WWII veteran celebrates his 100th birthday on Christmas Eve WWII veteran William (Bill) Horne in Texas in 1945 before he went to Iwo Jima for nine months of his four-year deployment.On Thursday, many members of Horne's family will gather outside his daughter's home in Wells, where he now lives, to celebrate his 100th birthday around a fire pit, a grill and an open house, masked and socially distant.She said the family is thrilled to be honoring their cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on his 100th birthday Thursday.Three of his four children are alive and he has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
