Thandeka Moyo-Ndlovu, Senior Health Reporter WHILE many women of late take pride in weaning their babies off breast milk early, Mrs Sifiso Gumbo is one of the few who have gone beyond the acceptable two years of breast feeding.She decided to give her two children breast milk until they were four years defying what contemporary women term normal.She said her daughter eats isitshwala with vegetables with the rest of the family and then drinks breast milk twice a day in the morning before school and after school.“My four-year-old daughter is still on breast milk and it may seem funny but I cannot afford to buy her fruits, juice and these fancy cereals that other babies have.

However, I know that breast milk contains all the nutrients that my baby needs,” she said.“The WHO recommends early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, feeding the child only breast milk for the first six months (exclusive breastfeeding), and continuing to breastfeed for up to 24 months or beyond, with introduction of nutritionally adequate and safe complementary (solid) foods at six months as well.
