In 2018, the London, England-based writer Claire Nelson had fallen some 4.5 metres during a solo hike in Joshua Tree National Park near Palm Springs, Calif. She spent the next three nights on the sand doing everything possible to shelter herself from the blistering sun and treacherous nights.
