The Mainichi p A part of the Hyogo Prefectural Government building that houses the prefectural board of education is seen in this photo taken in Kobe's Chuo Ward.(Mainichi) p KOBE -- The Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education has decided to basically require students entering prefectural high schools including special needs schools to buy their own tablet devices for their studies from the 2022 academic year.According to the prefectural education board, utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) has been accelerating amid the coronavirus crisis.As children would be able to use tablets at home if they are purchased by their guardians or parents, the education board announced at a principals' association meeting from around summer that it plans on asking students to buy tablets at their own expense.

A representative of the education board said, "Tablet devices, like stationary, have become things that each student owns and uses.The move comes as a measure to continue online classes in high school, after such instruction methods spread among compulsory education in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
