Many Americans are unaware that the Aug. 28, 1963, March on Washington occurred on the anniversary of the 1955 murder of Emmett Till. At that rally Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The month of August has many anniversaries of important events.August was also the month in 1831 that Nat Turner led his famous rebellion in Virginia, a rebellion that led to United Methodist congregations creating white and Black churches, which gave birth to Asbury United Methodist Church in 1838.
