The friendship between Carole Gould and Julie Devey began just a year ago after their only daughters were murdered in the sanctuary of their own homes, by their ex-boyfriends.

Two months after splitting up with fellow graduate Joe Atkinson, 25, (right) Poppy Devey Waterhouse, 24, (left) a gifted mathematician with a first-class degree, was murdered by him in the flat they still shared in Leeds 'The savagery and violence of the attacks seem to count for nothing in the eyes of the law and this is infuriating,' says Julie.'There was no preamble, no small talk,' says Julie.' says Julie.'To this day I couldn't be more proud of her,' says Julie.
