The USS Constellation, a naval aircraft supercarrier under construction, caught on fire in the Brooklyn Navy Yard on the East River in New York on Dec. 19, 1960. The fire killed 50 civilian workers and injured about 330 others more. Construction on the ship was almost done and the wooden scaffolding helped accelerate the fire.
