The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, i.e. ISIL, or ISIS, has been busy banning things left and right. To a normal person, the bans sound outright ridiculous, but you know how it goes.
Here is a list of top 10 ridiculous bans by ISIS.
1. No skinny jeans
According to the group, people who break the law will face a jail time of 10 days and will be forced to take an “Islamic course” during their time in prison.
2. No music
ISIS made a statement early this year banning music in most places.
In its second statement, ISIS “banned music and songs in cars, at parties, in shops and in public, as well as photographs of people in shop windows.” The organization urged shop owners to remove photographs of men and women from their shop windows, warning that “whoever violates these rules will subject themselves to the necessary Sharia punishment.”
“Songs and music are forbidden in Islam, as they prevent one from the remembrance of God and the Koran and are a temptation and corruption of the heart,” the statement added.
3. No cigarettes
4. No breeding of pigeons
Recently, some senior clerics fighting for ISIS issued an instruction banning pigeon-breeding claiming that “the sight of the birds’ genitals as they fly overhead is offensive to Islam.”

Our thoughts exactly.
5. No math
Math is bad.
Students will be forbidden to learn math, music, social studies (especially anything about elections or democracy), and even sports. Teachers who break the rules “will be punished,” according to fliers posted in IS-controlled territory.
Students will instead learn all about “belonging to Islam,” and how to “denounce infidelity and infidels.”
6. No social studies
The dictionary definition of social studies is: the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Promote civic competence. ISIS? Yeah, right.
7. No street magic
To ISIS, the street magician’s tricks are anti-Islamic because they are performed through “illusions and falsehood.” According to them, Koran forbid the tricks because the time people spent captivated by them could have been better used by going to a mosque, said Mirror.
8. No history, arts, psychology, philosophy in school
All schools in Raqqa and other ISIS-held cities must teach Islamic law, and students who refuse face punishment up to and including death.
9. No chemistry in school
From Al Arabiya:
The decision to remove chemistry and philosophy from the curriculums comes as ISIS militants said “they do not fit in with the laws of god,” the London-based monitor group said.
10. No shaving
Early this month, ISIS folks distributed leaflets that said, from today all men must grow full beards or face severe punishment.
A translation of the leaflet by AFP reads:
What hairdressers do today, shaving and trimming men’s beards, is an accessory to sin.
Thanks to our brothers from the Islamic police, an order has been issued for the shaving of beards to be banned and violators to be detained.
